Topic: Scalable Mixed-Integer Optimization for Long-Term Hydropower Operations
Abstract: This seminar introduces a computationally efficient and operationally realistic framework for optimizing reservoir releases and hydropower generation over long planning horizons. The proposed mixed-integer programming model captures the nonlinear relationship among reservoir level, water discharge, and power output by discretizing hydraulic head and reformulating key nonconvex system dynamics. It also incorporates practical operating rules that support transparent decision-making under uncertainty and balance electricity production with flood-management and environmental objectives. Important features include head-dependent power generation, travel times for upstream flows, release-smoothing requirements, and a turbine shutdown policy. The framework is demonstrated using real-world data from the Lower Mekong Basin.
Bio: Dr. Fatemeh Karamyar holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University and currently teaches Decision Economics at Sabancı University. Her research focuses on mathematical optimization, particularly mixed-integer programming, scheduling, and network optimization, with applications in water–energy systems, production planning, transportation, and sustainable infrastructure.
Her interdisciplinary research has involved collaboration with scholars in hydrology, transportation, public health, data science, and economics. Her current work examines how optimization can support resilient infrastructure under uncertainty, including multi-reservoir hydropower operations, electric transit scheduling and charging, and dual-resource scheduling. In addition to her research, she has supported the teaching of operations research, engineering economy, and probability and statistics.
